You can know if God “is with you” if you have the Holy Spirit living inside you.

Who is the Holy Spirit? The Spirit is the third member of the Christian Trinity, the third person of the triune God. The Holy Spirit, simply put, is God.

How do you get the “Holy Spirit” in your life? In order to have the Holy Spirit living inside you, first you must be saved, profess faith in Christ, and be baptized.

Ok. How can I “get saved?” Easy. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Hear the Gospel: The first step to salvation is listening to the gospel, the life and death of christ, and reading God’s word. Though it is not necessary, reading the gospels of Mathew, Mark, Luke or John is a good idea.
  2. Accept Jesus as the Son of God. According to the Bible, all Christians who recognize Jesus as the Son of God are able to be saved.
  3. Repenting and Asking Forgiveness from Sin: The third step to salvation is changing one’s heart and turning from sin.
  4. Acknowledge Jesus died and Rose from the Dead: Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment humanity deserved for their immorality, and rose from the dead after three days, in order to conquer death that we might join him in Heaven when we die.
  5. Confession: The fifth step to salvation is verbal acknowledgment of faith in Christ.
  6. Join a Church and Get Baptized: The next step to salvation is being buried with Christ by baptism into his death. What is a baptism? It is a public proclamation of faith and your becoming a new creation in Christ.
  7. Following Christ: For the rest of your life, you will continue in obedience to Christ.

Congrats! Now that you are saved, you now have the Holy Spirit ( aka God ) living inside you. Now what?

The Holy Spirit is important in many ways. Here are a few reasons why:

1. The Holy Spirit Is a Helper Who Teaches and Reminds. In John 14:26 Jesus told his disciples, “the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26, ESV).

2. The Holy Spirit Convicts the World, and You, of Sin: n addition to providing wise counsel, attorneys also provide evidence used to convict criminals. In a similar fashion, the Holy Spirit will prove the sin, righteousness, and judgment of the world.

3. The Holy Spirit Dwells in Believers and Fills Them: The Holy Spirit is God’s presence in the lives of believers.

4. The Holy Spirit Is a Source of Revelation, Wisdom, and Power. “These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except for their own spirit within them? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10–11).

5. The Holy Spirit Guides to All Truth: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you” (John 16:13–15).

6. The Holy Spirit Is a Seal in the Lives of Believers. The Holy Spirit is our mark of adoption as God’s children. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his followers so that they could be confident in their salvation.

7. The Holy Spirit Helps in a Christian’s Weakness and Intercedes for Them: “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God” (Romans 8:26–27).

8. The Holy Spirit Makes Believers New and Sanctifies and Enables Believers.

“But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you” (Romans 8:10–11).

The work of the Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life is an on-going process of becoming holy through sanctification. Through the conviction and power of the Holy Spirit, believers will not indulge the sinful acts of the flesh (Galatians 5:16–21) but will bear the good fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–25).

So what does the “Holy Spirit” feel like? The Spirit is described as a metaphorical kind of wind, or fire, and their presence in your life brings about freedom, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness, and self control.

So, to answer your question, to know that God is with you, you only have to know if you are saved or not. If you are, then God is living inside you. If you are not, but want to be, all you have to do is accept Christ and receive His salvation today.
