Six Ways We Can Follow the Will of God

Someone asked me the other day how they can better follow God’s will for their life. This is what I sent them.

Here are a few ways we can do the will of God:

  1. “Love thy neighbor as yourself.” Love everyone, y’all. Yeah, even that people who have different skin tones, gender identities and sexual orientations than you.
  2. “Love your enemy.” Your asshole neighbor who is trying to get you evicted? Love them. Your competitor that is trying to run you out of business? Love them. Your ex you tried to ruin your life? Love them ( but don’t get back together with them, move on ).
  3. “Welcome the immigrant.” The Bible literally tells us to be kind and welcome immigrants. I don’t care what your favorite political party or politicians tells you, if you want to follow God, be nice to immigrants. “When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not wrong him. The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as one of your citizens; you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt”Lev. 19:33
  4. Feed the hungry. “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Matt. 25: 31. Yeah, yeah, I know. Taking care of the poor is a real bummer, but God said to do it, so do it and don’t ask questions.
  5. Take Care of Orphans. James 1:27 says, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction.” Need I say more?
  6. Help the Poor. “Uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.” Psalm 82:3. If you say you are Christian, and actively hurt the poor, you failing at following God. If you say you are Christian, and oppress people ( for example, the LGBTQ community ) you are failing at following God. You cannot call yourself Christian and hate and oppress people. Don’t get mad at me. Get mad at the Bible.

As Jesus Christ himself said, all of the law in the Bible can be summed up in “loving your neighbor.” So, if it isn’t love, isn’t loving, and doesn’t show love to someone, then don’t do it. It really is that simple.
