Why Do People Who Aren’t Buddhist Meditate?

Because meditation is not just a Buddhist practice. It is a Christian one as well.

Though Christian meditation is a bit of a lost art, and not as many Christians practice meditation nowadays, I can assure you that it very much exists.

Buddhist meditation, in my understanding, is focuses on breathing techniques, self realization, calming the mind, finding freedom from desire, and is not focused on a relationship with a Creator.

In many ways, Christian meditation is almost the opposite of Buddhist meditation: it is not focused on breathing technique in any way, has nothing to do with self realization, the goal is not to rid yourself of desire but fulfilling your desire in Christ, and the main focus is on deepening your relationship with God, who loves you with an everlasting love. Meditation helps us Christians to find our peace, happiness and joy in God our Father by spending time with Him, and absorbing Gods love and peace through Scripture, as the cornerstone of every Christian life is our relationship with Jesus.

Christian meditation is also defined as the process of deliberately focusing on specific thoughts about God or on Bible passages and reflecting on their meaning in the context of the love of God. Christian meditation aims to heighten the personal relationship based on the love of God that marks Christian communion.

Some Bible Verses that I love to meditate on include:

“LORD, your faithful love reaches to the sky. Your faithfulness is as high as the clouds. Your goodness is higher than the highest mountains.” Psalm 36: 5

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” 1 John 4:9

“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! “ 1 John 3:1

Spending time meditation with the One who loves you most every day is a great way to grow your relationship with God, and become a more loving, peaceful, and happy person. I highly recommend trying meditation to all Christians!
